Purcell Family of America

An association to help those trace the Purcell family line

Looking for info. to tie my Purcell family back to some place in Canada or Ireland so research can continue.

My GG grandmother was Alice Purcell, b. Jan 1833 in Ireland, married first to TIMOTHY DELANEY, a general laborer who sometimes worked for the railroads. Family stories say they came down through Canada to the U.S. His naturalization papers indicated he was in the U.S. as of 6/1846. First son, Patrick Henry Delaney was born somewhere in Vermont on Dec. 23, 1849. In the 1850 U.S. census the family is shown living in Jackson, Washington Co., NY, which is just over the border from Vermont. In their household besides Pat and his parents, are suspected relatives, Catherine and Anna Purcell. Another child, Edward, was born within Vermont on Apr. 7, 1851. Within the next four years the family migrated to Cobleskill, Schoharie Co., NY. This is where the rest of the children were born; Jane, Anna, Timothy, Ellen, Alice and Catherine 'Kate' Delaney. Patrick Delaney died between 1865-1870. By the time of the 1870 census, Alice is remarried to PATRICK KENNY, incorrectly shown in the census as Kinney. He too is a native of Ireland. They continue to reside in Cobleskill until sometime after the 1880 census, when they moved to Albany, Albany Co., NY, where they lived on Kenwood Rd.

Alice Purcell Delaney Kenny died there on Nov. 7, 1903 of pneumonia. She was buried Nov. 9th in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands, Albany Co., NY. Her death certificate lists her parents as JOHN and ALICE PURCELL of Ireland.

Any help sincerely appreciated, as currently, I'm stuck.

Katie, since you have her parents' names, you can try the Griffith's Valuations, an index of householders in all Irish counties in 1858. Each county is indexed separately. You can find Griffith's on film at many Mormon Family History Centers locally. You can find the one nearest you by going to the website www.familysearch.org.
Good luck...my Irish forebears all came over before Griffith's was published.
