Md 1st 31 Jan 1869, Gulia Elma Bales, b 23 Aug 1849 in Vermillion Co., Illinois, d 19 Dec 1872 at Alba, Jasper Co., MO. Father, George Bales (13 March 1814-24 Jan 1890); Mother, Mary Rees (23 April 1808-11 Feb 1893). The Bales Family was Quaker. According to Quaker sources, George, Mary and “Gulielma” moved to Missouri and in September 1868 and joined the Union Monthly Meeting in Jasper Co., MO. George Duncan is buried, with his 2nd wife, Elizabeth Gilfillan, in Mexia City Cemetery, Mexia, Limestone Co., TX. Gulia Elma Bales Purcell is buried in Friends Cemetery, Purcell, Jasper Co., MO.
George Duncan Purcell was primarily a farmer but also worked as a carpenter, oil distributor, and teamster (mules). He and his family moved numerous times seeking better economic opportunity. He kept a Journal from 1868 until his death in July 1923. The Journal was transcribed by Aloa Dereta in the 1980s and copies are available at the Mormon Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. As of 2023, the location of the original diaries is unknown.

Lillie Dale Purcell (cont) , Md 2nd 17 Apr 1900 in Jasper Co., MO, Stewart M. Righter, b abt 1857 in New Jersey and d 28 Apr 1924 in Cheyenne, Laramie, WY. He was a zinc ore miner. Lillie and Stewart had no children of their own but sometime between 1900 and 1910, Stewart adopted Lillie’s two children from her previous marriage: 1900 U.S. Census shows Earl and Gladys as “step” children of Stewart; the 1910 U.S. Census shows them as his children. Lillie and her 2nd husband, Stewart M. Righter, are buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Cheyenne, Laramie Co., WY.

Note: The 1870 US Census lists a son, “Bailey” born in “Feb. 1870.” This has to be an error by the Census enumerator and the individual is probably “Lillie” (or “Lilly”) who was born in Feb. 1870. There is no official record or mention of a “son” in George’s Journal.
